Our special services
A unique feature of The Prostate Centre is the range of advice we make available to anyone who is diagnosed with prostate disease. We want you to take as much time as you feel you need when considering your options, and encourage you to make use of our printed and audiovisual library of information materials.
We will never pressurise you into embarking on any course until you are happy with it. We always respect patient choice, so among the options open to you is a referral to other highly regarded centres, whether in the UK or abroad.
• For prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy (surgery) is Professor Kirby’s particular area of expertise. Both he and some other Prostate Centre urologists can perform this using either the nerve-sparing open technique or by laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery aided by the da Vinci robot system. However, you may wish to explore other options that The Prostate Centre can make available to you (such as brachytherapy, radiotherapy, cryotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, active surveillance), either with Professor Kirby or with another of our team with the relevant expertise.
• You will also, if you wish, have the opportunity to ask questions and to speak to the pathologist who will explain your biopsy or radical prostatectomy histology findings.
• If you find yourself distressed by your diagnosis, concerned about urinary incontinence or possible impact on your sexual function, or need help in handling family issues surrounding your condition, we have qualified professionals who will help you deal with the issues. We fully recognise the impact such a diagnosis can have, not only on you but also on your partner and family, and encourage you to seek help from the various resources at our disposal.
• For benignly enlarged prostates, we can offer the PVP Greenlight Laser treatment as an alternative to the standard TURP, or medical therapy. Careful discussion will be needed to assess your suitability for any of these options.
