The Prostate Centre

Further Investigations

If the PSA is raised above normal levels, one option we will discuss with you is whether or not you should have a biopsy, whereby tiny samples of prostate tissue are collected via a needle. We will explain what is involved and, if you wish to proceed, ask you to begin taking a short course of antibiotics to prevent infection.  We can arrange the biopsy either later in the day or at another time to suit you.  You need not worry about the procedure as we make every effort to make it a painless experience for you; it will be done with great care for your comfort and you will be given a local anaesthetic.

We have access to some of the most sophisticated pathology expertise in the country.  The laboratory will fast-track the analysis and provide exceptional service to ensure that in most instances your biopsy results can be known within 24 hours.

We are also one of a limited number of centres to be able to offer the PCA3 test, which involves collection of a small amount of urine passed after a prostatic massage. This test can be a useful further indicator in cases where there is a history of high PSA levels but negative biopsies. The sample is flown to the USA for analysis and takes  1-2 weeks to be reported.
