Before You Arrive
Every new patient should bring with him, or arrange to have sent beforehand, a letter of referral from his general practitioner or specialist. This is not only helpful to us when we meet you; it ensures, too, that we conform to the General Medical Council’s guidelines on good medical practice. It is also often a prerequisite for health insurance companies, and you may find you are refused benefit if you have not been referred to us by another doctor.
Please note, however, that a referral letter is not essential if you are attending solely for a Prostate+PLUS Men’s Health Check. GPs will usually refer patients only for specific problems, and insurance policies will not normally cover screening. We will nevertheless write to your GP to keep him or her informed of your test results and any treatment you may have. This, again, is considered good medical practice by the GMC; however in certain circumstances you have the right to withhold permission for such correspondence.
A Patient Details form is enclosed with this Guide which you should fill in as fully and as accurately as you can, and bring it with you. You may like also to complete the IPSS Score sheet which will help us in our assessment of your case.
