Cardiovascular risk reduction

The ethos of The Prostate Centre is to focus on the maintenance of health and not just the treatment of sickness. So it’s important to us to pay attention to the challenge of preventing chronic disease, particularly of the cardiovascular system.

We believe that every man over the age of 40 should be aware of his calculated cardiovascular risk and take active steps to keep it at a minimum. There is now a wealth of evidence to confirm that a multifactorial cardiovascular risk prediction estimate, rather than just the measurement of risk factors such as high blood pressure and high blood lipids (fats), as might be done by your GP, can ultimately reduce the risk of death or disability from stroke or heart attack by as much as 75 per cent.

Calculating your risk is done at The Prostate Centre with a range of simple tests and a consultation with Professor Mike Kirby. Those found to be at high risk will need further investigation, either with us or at centres nearby. Tests might include exercise ECG, coronary angiography (with or without CT scanning) and more specialised blood tests.

Please note that fees for the services outlined above will not be covered by health insurance as policies do not usually cover health screening. Although expert in his field, Professor Mike Kirby is not on any insurer’s “approved specialist” list because he is not a hospital consultant. Should you wish to have a consultation with Mike, you must understand that it will be on a self-pay basis. If however he refers you on to a cardiologist or other specialist on the basis of symptoms or abnormal findings, it is likely that you will then become eligible for insurance benefit.
